Tassal, How we care

Our home is Tasmania, a beautiful island with a rich maritime history where our ambition to produce healthy, fresh Atlantic salmon began more than 40 years ago. From humble beginnings, we are Australia’s largest producer of Tasmanian grown Atlantic salmon. We have proudly introduced Tiger Prawns and Ocean grown Barramundi to our operation.

Our ambition is to produce delicious, healthy, locally sourced seafood, with a focus on quality, to provide for a growing population.

As responsible seafood producers, we care about the welfare and quality of our fish and prawns, the environment in which we operate, the local communities and our passionate people.

At Tassal we are focused on continuous improvement and using the best technology, including two wellboats to maximise he fish health and biosecurity outcome and our global leading remote operations centre which enables us to monitor our fish in real time.

Associations and Certifications

We are members of organisations and associations, such as the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), Salmon Tasmania, Australian Prawn Farmers Association (APFA) and Australian Barramundi Farmers Association (ABFA).

We hold third party certifications across our operations. These certifications are achieved by implementing the relevant standard before being audited and assessed against the criteria in the standard.

The certifications we hold are either Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Global GAP or Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).

How we care for our people and communities

It is important to keep our people connected and embracing the same set of business values, from our operation in Dover, far south of Tasmania to Cone Bay, Western Australia and to Mission Beach in tropical North Queensland.

Tassal has a long history of supporting local communities in Tasmania, and many of our operations are in remote or regional areas, where our people both live and work. We have extended our community engagement and support commitments to include our Prawns and Barramundi communities.

Tassal continues to support community and in 2024 invested $255,000 through 118 sponsorships throughout Australia. We focus on initiatives that enhance resilience, wellbeing, safety and connectedness of local communities. Through our Tassal Community foundation we support schools, charities, sporting clubs and community initiatives via sponsorship, donations and financial support and also coordinate and assist in marine rescues.

How many jobs does Tassal support?

We employ approximately 1,700 people across Australia from Tasmania to Queensland through to Western Australia. A lot of these jobs are in regional communities, supporting local businesses, schools and community groups. Over 1000 of these people work in Tassie in our salmon operations on the water, processing facilities, hatchery or corporate office.

For more information on our people & communities, refer to our 2023 Sustainability Highlights report.

How we care about waste reduction.

Sustainable Packaging

Playing our part for waste free oceans, coasts and households, includes our focus on packaging and finding sustainable packaging options.

Tassal is a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) Packaging Sustainability Framework, a co-regulatory, not-for-profit organisation which partners with government and industry to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment. We are working to achieve the 2025 National Packaging Targets.

We are working to achieve the goal of 100 per cent reusable, recyclable, or compostable consumer packaging by 31 December 2025, and our packaging will feature the Australasian Recycling Labels.

Where does salmon waste go?

At Tassal we have invested heavily in our Triabunna rendering facility in Tassie, and the great majority of fish that is not processed for consumption is safely repurposed for pet and livestock feed.  If we can’t process the waste on site we work closely with Tasmanian waste removal service to properly manage it in line with strict environmental regulations.
